MATERIALIALITY of the BUILT
Constructive Play with Materials
“A great building must begin with the unmeasurable, must go through measurable means when it is being designed and in the end must be unmeasurable”, said the legend Ar. Louis-i-Kahn.
We interpret the measurable component, being spoken about, as the building material. The inquiry of the workshop is at two fold level. One, to challenge the notion of what is considered as the “build-able” material. This exercise opens possibility of considering new objects as building material, re-purposing its original intent, and also up-scaling its life cycle. On the other level, it looks at the conventional building materials and questions the way it has been hitherto built with.
With both the material set, it is imperative to understand the physical and aesthetic properties, before instilling the poetics of it, in creating “unmeasurable” architecture. This is the underlying intent of the workshop: to explore the materiality of the built, by rethinking its origin, usage and constructibility. The workshop activities will focus on detailing, making prototypes and constructing, therefore providing a holistic building experience, with unexplored building materials and methods.
